The Story of MailDomainCheck
It was an ordinary Friday evening in autumn 2023 when three friends sat together in a small café in Berlin – frustrated, exhausted, but determined to make a change.
Marcus, an experienced backend developer, stared at his laptop screen. Once again, his e-commerce project was struggling with massive spam registrations. "Another 2,000 fake accounts today," he sighed. "All disposable email addresses. My server can't handle this anymore."
Daniel, usually the optimistic frontend developer of the group, nodded wearily. His latest SaaS startup had just survived a massive bot attack. "I feel you. We spent three days doing nothing but deleting thousands of fake accounts. They keep using new throwaway email domains. How are you supposed to keep track of them all?"
Thomas, the third member and a passionate DevOps engineer, leaned back. "The crazy thing is: there are so many email validation tools out there, but none really solves the problem. Some are too expensive, others have outdated lists, and some are so complicated you need a PhD to integrate them."
A longer silence followed. Only the quiet hum of the espresso machine and typing on keyboards at neighboring tables could be heard. Then, suddenly, the three looked at each other – almost simultaneously, each had the same thought.
"What if we build this ourselves?" Marcus said quietly, but with a determination in his voice that made the others pay attention.
Daniel leaned forward. "A tool that's simple. Clear. Transparent. One that we'd actually want to use ourselves."
"And current," Thomas added. "With real data. Not just a static list from three years ago."
Over the next hours, they sketched on napkins and in Google Docs what MailDomainCheck should become: a free, fast, and reliable service for checking email domains. No hidden costs, no complicated APIs – just visit a URL and immediately know whether a domain is trustworthy or not.
The following weeks were intense. Late nights, countless cups of coffee, heated discussions about architectures and algorithms. Marcus built the backend, Daniel perfected the user interface, and Thomas made sure everything ran fast and stable. They integrated various data sources, developed algorithms to detect suspicious domains, and tested the system repeatedly – with real examples, with real problems from their own projects.
In January 2024, MailDomainCheck went live. Initially just a small side project, used by a few friends and colleagues. But the feedback was overwhelming. Developers loved the simplicity. Startups appreciated the free pricing. E-commerce operators were grateful for the accuracy.
Today, just a few months later, MailDomainCheck processes thousands of requests daily and helps developers and businesses worldwide make their web presence more secure. But for Marcus, Daniel, and Thomas, it's about more than just numbers. It's about solving a problem they experienced themselves – and helping others avoid the same frustrating nights they went through back then.
Our Mission: Making the internet a little safer, a little cleaner, and a little less spam-infested – one domain at a time.
